Project Manager: Angola

The Project Manager will support the implementation of the Angola Lisima Landscape conservation initiative. The project aims to protect 3.9 million acres through community-led conservation and establish 250,000 acres of legally recognized Protected Conservation Areas (PCAs) by 2030.

The Project Manager role will oversee the project functions relating to landscape management, community conservation, sustainable natural resource use, stakeholder engagement and relationship building, financial management, infrastructure development as well as project establishment and operations.

Type: Full-time, permanent

Location: Field-based between Tempué and Cuíto, Angola, with regular travel to engage partners and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

1. Project planning and management

  • Participate in the co-ordination of Community Protected Area establishment and designation according to national and regional laws and regulations as well as international conservation status.
  • Build and maintain networks and collaborative relationships with local and national partners, communities and other stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate the establishment of community conservation areas and management guidelines.
  • Development of project management plans, business plans and annual work plans.
  • Implementation of projects and management plan actions.
  • Co-ordinate the implementation of project proposal outputs.
  • Land use and boundary mapping of the regedorias and associated manifestos.
  • Development of Standard Operating Procedures and implementation protocols for project activities.
  • Implement capacity and skills development of project teams, local project partners and communities related to project outputs.

2. Infrastructure Development

  • Oversee the development of infrastructure for operational readiness, including accommodation, offices, communications, primary access roads, fuel storage, etc.
  • Procurement, management and maintenance of vehicles and operational equipment.

3. Conservation Management

  • Lead the development and implementation of measures for conservation of habitats, species and ecosystems.
  • Implement sustainable practices of natural resource use integrating scientific data and indigenous knowledge and practices.
  • Implement habitat management and monitoring strategies according to project conservation objectives, e.g. fire management strategy, habitat restoration etc.

4. Community Programmes Management

  • Assist in the development of Community Engagement Strategy that meets the key objectives for the landscape
  • Oversee and support the community programmes manager in the implementation of the project community conservation objectives and activities.
  • Ensure comprehensive stakeholder engagement and relationship building is paramount in the process of community programme planning and implementation.
  • Ensure that significant emphasis is placed on trust building with communities and traditional authorities and the implementation of FPIC (Free Prior and Informed Consent) in all community programmes and establishment of agreements.
  • Support the development and designation of community conservation areas.
  • Ensure the participation of communities in conservation governance and management of the protected areas.
  • Supporting community governance structures and guiding natural resource management practices.
  • Explore and promote community livelihood and nature positive income generating opportunities.
  • Support the implementation of socio-economic surveys and participatory land-use visioning processes.

5. Personnel and Human Resource Management

  • Recruitment and management of project staff.
  • Implement HR processes relating to the management & supervision of staff. (Administration, polices and HR functions)
  • Ensure suitable working conditions, health, welfare and safety and security of operational teams.
  • Identify capacity development needs of the project team and implement associated development interventions.

6. Financial Management

  • Oversee the preparation and management of project budgets.
  • Ensure monthly financial reports are submitted timeously and accurately.
  • Ensure all in-country statutory company compliance is submitted and maintained as and when required.
  • Ensure all requisite insurance is in place and up to date for assets, human resources, equipment and third party or public liability.
  • Implement sound financial procedures for the use and allocation of resources.
  • Manage grant funding budgets and associated financial reporting.
  • Provide input into grant proposals regarding technical and strategic project elements.
  • Explore income sources, sustainable financing opportunities and support economic development within the project landscape (e.g Ecotourism).

7. Communication & Reporting

  • Provide project monthly, quarterly and annual reports as required.
  • Provide reports as required by funding grants.
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with the project team, local communities, partners, government departments and other associated stakeholders.
  • Engage and host journalists and media partners to communicate project progress, updates or activities.

Job Qualification & Skill Requirements:

  • Tertiary degree in Natural Resource Management. Post graduate degree will be an advantage.
  • 10 years experience in Conservation Project management.
  • Skills in managing infrastructure and field operations in a protected area.
  • Experience in managing vehicle fleet and associated equipment.
  • Experience working in rural areas and with rural communities and willing to live in a remote area.
  • Strong leadership & personnel management skills.
  • Proficient in computer use, in particular Microsoft Office suite.
  • Competent driver with clean and valid driving licence.
  • Fluent in English and Portuguese (or willingness to undergo intensive Portuguese language training prior to project commencement).
  • Private Pilot’s licence with hours will be a distinct advantage.

Camp Manager – Nkashi Knowledge Centre: Beetsha

Overseeing daily operations at the Beetsha Nkashi Knowledge Centre, the Camp Manager ensures a safe, inclusive, and well-run space for conservation learning, community engagement, and youth training.

The Botswana Wild Bird Trust (BWBT), as part of the Okavango Eternal Partnership, is seeking an experienced and hands-on Camp Manager to lead the operations and upkeep of the Beetsha Nkashi Knowledge Centre (BNKC). As a flagship community hub, BNKC supports conservation learning, inclusive livelihoods, youth training, and knowledge exchange. The Camp Manager will play a critical role in ensuring smooth, safe, and effective functioning of all camp facilities while fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment for both staff and visitors.

Reporting Lines: General Manager, BWBT

Location: Beetsha, Eastern Panhandle, Botswana

Type: Full-time, permanent

Key Focus Areas:

  • Day-to-day management of camp operations and facilities
  • Human resource supervision, mentoring, and team development
  • Kitchen, logistics, and visitor services oversight
  • Financial and administrative management
  • Community liaison and program support
  • Infrastructure maintenance and safety compliance

Key Responsibilities

1. Human Resource Management

  • Supervise daily staff activities across camp facilities, kitchen, and grounds
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and staff performance reviews
  • Build a positive, inclusive team culture; resolve conflicts professionally
  • Manage staff schedules, leave days, and development plans

2. Centre Operations & Logistics

  • Coordinate use of facilities for workshops, trainings, and guest programs
  • Ensure infrastructure is clean, safe, and functional
  • Support logistics for researchers, stakeholders, and community visitors
  • Ensure water, energy, and sanitation systems are fully operational
  • Co-develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

3. Administrative and Financial Oversight Manage petty cash, procurement, and inventory tracking Assist with stock takes and reporting to BWBT’s finance team Monitor expenditure to ensure alignment with approved budgets

4. Kitchen and Food Services Oversee food service operations and ensure balanced, nutritious meals during events Maintain hygiene standards and accommodate dietary needs

5. Maintenance and Infrastructure Plan and supervise repairs of accommodation, solar, water, and other camp systems Liaise with technicians for timely servicing Ensure preparedness for emergencies like flooding, bushfires, or health risks

6. Community Relations & Support Liaise with village leadership, VDCs, and local Trusts to sustain buy-in Support BWBT programs through event logistics and camp access Ensure a welcoming environment for women, youth, and people with disabilities

Qualifications and Experience

Required: Minimum Diploma or Degree in Community Development, Hospitality, Facility Management, or similar field Minimum 5 years of experience in camp, lodge, or facility operations Strong background in managing staff, admin systems, and procurement Experience working in rural or NGO settings Fluent in Setswana and English Valid Class B Driver’s License (Botswana) Willingness to live and work in a remote area
